IVFD Obesity or Overweight, a Chronic Inflammatory Status in Male Reproductive System, Leads to Mice and Human Subfertility [Mouse & human]
For overweight and obese male patients, the increased levels of TNF-α: and IL-6 were also observed in their seminal plasma. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the TNF-α: and IL-6 levels and BMI whereas they were inversely correlated with the sperm concentration and motility. In conclusion, impairment of male fertility may stem from a chronic inflammatory status in the male genital tract of obese individuals.

IVFD Attitudes of sperm, egg and embryo donors and recipients towards genetic information and screening of donors
Results: Donors and recipients acknowledged the importance of genetic information and were comfortable with the existing level of genetic screening of donors. Recipients recognised some potential benefits of expanded genetic screening of donors: however both recipients and donors were apprehensive about extended genomic technologies, with concerns about how this information would be used and the ethics of genetic selectivity.

IVFD The significance of human spermatozoa vacuoles can be elucidated by a novel procedure of array comparative genomic hybridization
The data presented herein suggest the existence of subpopulations of spermatozoa potentially appropriate for IVF–ICSI, as they appear normal according to the current MSOME and vacuoles classification, however they are almost certainly genetically damaged.

IVFD What to do About Large Numbers of Abandoned Human Embryos?
Gleicher and Caplan now argue that a more logical and more ethical approach to this rapidly growing problem, that also would better reflect the special respect the field extends to human embryos, would be creation of a third option, under which abandoned embryos could still contribute to the betterment of mankind by making them available to carefully vetted research in qualified research institutions. Title
Is there a better way to manage the stockpile of frozen embryos?
Summary
This letter to Nature Biotechnology by Gleicher and Chaplan argue for the establishment of a not-for-profit embryo bank to receive surplus embryos for validated research as a solution to the stockpile
Comment
The authors argue against the established guidelines restricting the use of abandoned embryos for research suggesting a way out of the in-pass of dealing with abandoned embryos is to establish a government approved, not-for-profit institution to receive such embryos and provide them from approved research. It is thought that about 9% of all embryos frozen will be abandoned leading to about 90,000 (yes 90,000) in the USA alone. Imagine the numbers worldwide. The logistics of dealing with these embryos is enormously costly (in time, wages and diversions).// Anyone who has dealt with chasing the couple who commissioned the clinic to freeze them in the first place will know just how hard it is to resolve issues. Even when the state puts a limit of the duration of storage, it is hard. Therefore the suggestion that there is a location where abandoned embryos can be relocated is an attractive option. It could also be the place where researchers can got to obtain embryos in a timely manner rather than having to wait in individual clinics.// In a funny way, clinics have created this problem by asking clients to renew their storage annually.Would it not be better for a clinic to obtain the clients wishes and instructions about their future fate BEFORE embryos are frozen. In this way, the clinic has clear directions on how to process all embryos including abandoned embryos. For instance, a client may instruct a clinic at set point to discard or move to a research body and no further contact is required. Furthermore, many clients may like to have the option of donating their surplus embryos to such a body. It saves them from having to make a decision on their fate knowing that some good may come from such anonymous use. It is the experience of many that once a couple have achieved their goals of parenthood, they display an altruistic approach to the fate of their remaining embryos. //

Can reduced male infertility in obese males be seen as an inflammatory response?
Summary
The Chinese authors of this paper have noted increased concentrations of TNF and IL-6 in the semen of obese males and these were correlated to motility and concentration. In other words yes!
Comment
This interesting paper has looked for markers of inflammation (TNF and IL-6) in the reproductive tissue of mice and in the seminal plasma of obese males. IVFdaily is interested in the results for obese males that while there is considerable variation, they reported a significant increase in both TNF and IF-6 between normal, overweight and obese males. While there were many men who were weight challenged and had normal marker levels, there was a statistical relationship.// This raises some interesting points in relation to the perceived reduction in sperm counts over time and provides a link between a growing level of obesity and falling fertility. It would therefore not be unreasonable that such markers be tested for in clients attending for IVF and where the husband was overweight and if elevated recommend a weight reduction programme to improve sperm counts. This may lead to more spontaneous conceptions rather that using IVF to treat a mans lifestyle induced fertility.// Indeed, there is growing issue that women are having to commit to IVF to treat a male issue but this is another story.//
